The vatu was introduced in 1981 to replace the New Hebrides franc at par. Two years later, the Central Bank of Vanuatu issued coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 vatu. The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu stopped issuing 1 and 2 vatu coins in 2011, as they had become obsolete due to inflation. The Royal Australian Mint issued new coins in 2015 as part of a coinage reform. These coins are in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 vatu.
The 2 Vanuatu vatu coin front design features the Coat of Arms of Vanuatu and the issue date. The reverse of the coin presents the denomination and a Triton’s trumpet or the giant triton. This coin is part of the 1983 – 2002 series, its rim is plain, and its color is gold.
