The soʻm has been the official currency of Uzbekistan since 1993, when it replaced the ruble at par. The word soʻm means “pure” in Kyrgyz, Uyghur, and Uzbek. The first banknotes issued by the State Bank of Uzbekistan were in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000, and 10,000 soʻm.
