The peso is the official currency in Uruguay since 1993. Because of World War II’s economic difficulties, the peso was replaced by the “new peso” in 1975, but in 1993 the peso returned as official currency in the country. The first coins were issued in 1994 in denominations 10, 20 and 50 centésimos, 1 and 2 pesos uruguayos. The 5 and 10 coins were published between 2003 and 2004 and replaced the correspondents’ notes. A new series was introduced in 2011 with denominations of 1-, 2-, 5- and 10-pesos coins.

The 2 Pesos Uruguayos coin front design features the National Coat of Arms (contains a scale, the hill of Montevideo, a horse and an ox, the Sun of May, laurel and other olive leaves and a light blue ribbon). The reverse coin design has the Carpincho (Capybara) and the denomination. This coin is part of the commemorative 2011 – 2019 series, its rim is plain, and its color is gold.
