The peso is the official currency in Uruguay since 1993. Because of World War II’s economic difficulties, the peso was replaced by the “new peso” in 1975, but in 1993 the peso returned as official currency in the country. The first banknotes were issued between 1995 and 1995 in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 pesos, followed by 1000 and 2000 pesos note between 2000 and 2003. Coins in the same years replaced the 5 and 10 notes. In 2014, the government introduced a new banknote series with the vertical word “URUGUAY”.
The 1000 Pesos note front features Juana de Ibarbourou (1892 – 1979), who was an Uruguayan poet and one of the most popular Spanish America poets. The reverse note side has Ibarbourou Square books. This note is part of the 2014 – 2020 series and, its color is brown and green on multicolor.
