Description

The peso is the official currency in Uruguay since 1993. Because of World War II’s economic difficulties, the peso was replaced by the “new peso” in 1975, but in 1993 the peso returned as official currency in the country. The first coins were issued in 1994 in denominations 10, 20 and 50 centésimos, 1 and 2 pesos uruguayos. The 5 and 10 coins were published between 2003 and 2004 and replaced the correspondents’ notes. A new series was introduced in 2011 with denominations of 1-, 2-, 5- and 10-pesos coins.

The 10 Centesimos coin front design features José Gervasio Artigas (1974 – 1850), who was a national hero and known to many as the Father of Uruguayan Nationality. The reverse coin design has the denomination with a branch of bay leaves. This coin is part of the 1994 series, its rim is plain, and its color is silver.
