Description
The hryvnia is the official currency of Ukraine. The official currency symbol: ₴ or грн. The hryvnia was introduced to replace the karbovanets after the issuance of the Presidential Decree on August 26, 1996, which was published on August 29. Both hryvnias and karbovanets were used throughout the transition era, but traders were only required to give change in hryvnias. All bank accounts were automatically converted to hryvnia. The karbovanets were taken out of circulation during the changeover era. The leftover karbovanets could be exchanged for hryvnias at banks after September 1996.
Ukrainian hryvnia coins were minted in 1992 but were not introduced until September 1996. Initially, coins valued between 1 and 50 kopiyok were issued, followed by 1 hryvnia coin in 1997. The National Bank of Ukraine introduced the 2 hryvnia coin in April 2018. Today coins are circulating in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 kopiyok, ₴ 1 and ₴ 2.
The 5 hryvnia commemorative coin front design features the National Coat of Arms inside a three-petal ornament formed by three semicircles, the denomination, the name of the country and the issue date. The reverse of the coin illustrates the figure of a sower who walks through a field and sows the seeds. This coin is part of the 2000 commemorative series: ‘’Third Millennium’’. Its rim is segmented, and its color is gold and silver.
