Description

The hryvnia is the official currency of Ukraine. The official currency symbol: ₴ or грн. The hryvnia was introduced to replace the karbovanets after the issuance of the Presidential Decree on August 26, 1996, which was published on August 29. Both hryvnias and karbovanets were used throughout the transition era, but traders were only required to give change in hryvnias. All bank accounts were automatically converted to hryvnia. The karbovanets were taken out of circulation during the changeover era. The leftover karbovanets could be exchanged for hryvnias at banks after September 1996.

Currently, they are issued in denominations of ₴1, ₴2, ₴5, ₴10, ₴20, ₴50, ₴100, ₴200, ₴500 and ₴1000. The National Bank of Ukraine, which issued its first series of notes in 1996, is responsible for all current notes. Between 2004 and 2006, the current series of hryvnia banknotes went into circulation.

The 10 hryven note front design features the portrait of Ivan Stepanovych Mazepa (1639–1709), who was a Hetman of the Zaporizhian Host between 1687 and 1708. In 1707, he was given the title of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire for his contributions to the Holy League. Many literary, artistic, and musical works have been inspired by the historical events of Mazepa’s life. He was well-known for his support of the arts. The portrait is followed by the Mazepa Coat of Arms and the National Coat of Arms.

The reverse of the note illustrates the Holy Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Perchersk Lavra, followed by an ornamental design containing Kobza (musical instrument), a writing pen and inkwell, a lit candle, a tambourine, rolled scrolls, and an open book. The design is completed with the logo of the National Bank of Ukraine. The lettering of the note is presented in the Ukrainian language. This note is part of the 2006 – 2015 series, and its color is red, grey and multicolor underprint.
