The shilling is the official currency in Uganda since 1966, when it replaced the East African shilling. The official currency symbol is USh. The Bank of Uganda introduced the first notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 100 shillings. In 1973, 50 shilling notes were introduced, followed by 500 and 1000 shillings in 1983 and 5,000 shillings in 1985. In 1987, notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 shillings were introduced, followed by 500 and 1000 shillings in 1991. Between 1991 and 2010, the denomination that is circulating today is issued; 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 shillings. In 2010, the Bank of Uganda introduced a new family of notes.

The 2000 Ugandan shillings note front design features the Speke Memorial Monument in Jinja at Bukaya village, over a background of the Nile river and the National Coat of Arms. The reverse note side illustrates the Nile perch with stylized shapes of the animal. Both sides of the note present a stylized design of a man wearing a Karamojong headdress (tribal feather hat), the sketch of the map of Uganda and its location on the Equatorial Line, the Independence Monument in Kampala (Capital of Uganda), Ugandan mat patterns, Ugandan basketry and the denomination in the Swahili and English language. This note is part of the 2010 – 2019 series, and its color is blue on a multicolor underprint.
