Description

The Turkish lira is the official currency of Turkey. The roots of the lira come from the ancient Roman unit known as the libra, which spread throughout Europe and the Near East, where it was used until medieval times. The Turkish lira is one of the modern descendants of the ancient currency. The Ottoman lira was introduced in 1884 until the end of 1927. After the passing of the years and introducing different series of notes, in 2003, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey allowed a redenomination of the Turkish lira. The 50 Turkish lira note front design features Kemal Atatürk (1881 –1938), who was the first President of Turkey a Turkish from 1923 until he died in 1938, is known as the founding father of the Republic of Turkey and regarded as one of the most important political leaders of the 20th century. The crescent and star, which is designed from the national flag and is also used as a national emblem, a stylized drawing of a writing pen and an inkwell, and geometric patterns complete the illustration. The reverse of the note illustrates the portrait of Fatma Aliye Topuz (1862 –1936), who was a Turkish novelist and known as the first female novelist in Turkish literature and the Islamic world, on a background of a stylized drawing of a writing pen and an inkwell, flowers, books, and linear and circular patterns. The lettering on the note is in the Turkish language. This note is part of the 2009 – 2020 series, and its color is light brown and green on a multicolor underprint.
