The Tunisian dinar is the official currency of Tunisia since 1960, after being established as an accounting unit in 1958 and replaced the franc. The same year, the Central Bank of Tunisia issued coin in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. A 1/2 dinar coin was introduced in 1968 to replace the banknote.

The 50 Algerian millièmes coin front design feature a Tunisian pattern with inscription and issue date in the Islamic and Gregorian calendar. The reverse coin design has the denomination surrounded by a Tunisian pattern. This coin is part of the 1960 – 2009 (1380 – 1430) series. Its rim is fluted, and its color is gold.
