The shillingi is the official currency in Tanzania since 1966 when it replaced the East African shilling. The official currency symbol is TSh. The Bank of Tanzania introduced the first notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 100 shillingi. In 1972, the 5 shillingi notes were replaced by a coin. Between 1985 and 1990, the 50, 200, 500 and 1000 shillingi notes were introduced and, the 10, 20, 50, and 100 shillingi notes were replaced by coins between 1987 and 1994.in 1995, the 5000 and 10,000 shillingi notes were introduced, followed by 2000 shilingi in 2003. A new banknote series was issued in 2003 in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 shilingi.

The 5000 Tanzanian shillings note front design features a black rhino’s head, the National Coat of Arms, and the denomination. The lettering on that side of the note is in the Swahili language. The reverse note side illustrates the Mining plant of Geita in the Mwanza region, rough and cut diamonds. A holographic stamp with a giraffe and the denomination completed the design; the lettering on that side of the note is in the English language. This note is part of the 2010 – 2015 series, and its color is purple on multicolor underprint.
