The shillingi is the official currency in Tanzania since 1966 when it replaced the East African shilling. The official currency symbol is TSh. The Bank of Tanzania introduced the first coins in denominations of 5, 20, and 50 senti and 1 shillingi. In 1972, the 20 and 50 senti and 5 shillingi coins were issued, followed by 10 senti in 1977, 10 and 20 shillingi in 1990 and 100 shillingi in 1993. The 50 shillingi coins were introduced in 1996, followed by 200 shillingi in 1998 and 500 shillingi coins in 2014. Nowadays, are circulating coins in denominations of 50, 100, 200 and 500 shillingi.

The 500 Tanzanian shilingi coin front design features Abeid Amani Karume (1905 – 1972), who was the first President of Zanzibar (insular autonomous region of Tanzania) and Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964. The reverse coin design illustrates an African buffalo and the denomination in the Swahili language. This coin is part of the 2014 series, its rim is fluted, and its color is silver.
