The somoni is the official currency of Tajikistani since 2000 when it replaced the Tajikistani ruble. In 2001 the National Bank of Tajikistan introduced coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 diram, and 1, 3, and 5 somoni. In 2001, a second series was introduced in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 dirams, and 1 somoni, followed by a third series in 2018.
The 50 Tajikistan diram coin front design features the National Emblem (consists of a crown with seven stars flanked on the left side by cotton and wheat on the right side; both are surrounded by a ribbon with the colors of the national flag. The emblem contains the illustration of the Pamir mountains and a rising sun, supported at the base by an open book), and the issue date. The reverse of the coin design presents the denomination with a flower pattern underneath and a Tajikistan motif pattern on the left side. This coin is part of the 2011 – 2018 series, its rim is fluted, and its color is gold.
