Description
The krona is the official currency of Sweden. The name is derived from the Swedish word krona, which means crown. The official currency symbol: kr. The introduction of the krona started in 1876 when it replaced the riksdaler at par due to the Scandinavian Monetary Union, of which they are part of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Then in 1914, The Monetary Union was dissolved, and the three states members decided to keep the name on their respective currency. The krona is managed and administered by the Sveriges Riksbank, which is the central bank of Sweden. In 1874, the Riksbank introduced the first notes in denominations of 1 krona and 5, 10, 50, 100 and 1,000 kronor. The 10,000 kronor was introduced between 1939 to 1958. the notes and denominations initially introduced in 1874 were invalidated after 1998. The Riksbank introduced new banknotes series in 2015, in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 kronor.
The 500 kronor note front design features the portrait engraved from a photograph by Enar Merkel (Sweden photographer) of Märta Birgit Nilsson (1918 – 2005), was a Swedish dramatic soprano who was considered the leading Wagnerian soprano of her day, Nilsson was remembered for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, on a background with a picture of the Brünnhilde in Die Walküre (German Opera directed by Richard Wagner) in which Nilsson performed. The design is completed with a holographic music sheet, which includes the numerical denominations, the Three Crowns at the lower right corner, the National Emblem of Sweden, and a background with circular lines and small drawings that allude to light flashes. The reverse of the note presents the ox-eye daisy, which is the provincial flower of Skåne (the province where Birgit Nilsson grew up), on a background of the Öresund Bridge, which is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe, connecting Malmö and Copenhagen (Denmark). The design is completed with an overlay sketch of the map of Sweden highlighting the province of Skåne. The lettering of the note is presented in the Swedish language. This note is part of the 2014 – 2017 series, and its color is red-brown, orange, and multicolor.
