Description

The lilangeni is the official currency of Swaziland since 1974 when it was introduced at par the South African rand. Even so, the South African Rand is accepted in the country due to the Common Monetary Area agreement. In 1974, The Monetary Authority of Swaziland introduced notes in denominations of 1 lilangeni and 2, 5 and 10 emalangeni, followed by 20 emalangeni in 1978. In 1981, the Central Bank of Swaziland was established as an official issue entity and introduced a commemorative series note with 2, 5, 10 and 20 emalangeni. The 50 emalangeni note were introduced in 1990, followed by 100 and 200 emalangeni in 1995. In 2010, the Central Bank of Swaziland introduced a new series of banknotes with an adjustment in security measures.

The 10 Swazi emalangeni commemorative note front design features Mswati III, who is the King of Swaziland and head of the Swazi Royal Family, the National Coat of Arms and a sketch of a traditional Nguni shield with the denomination inside. The denomination in letters is presented in the Zulu language. The reverse of the note illustrates an “Incwala”, which is the main ritual of royalty in the Kingdom of Eswatini; It is depicted with Swazi princesses and warriors in front of the king’s lidlabe (crown). The design is completed with the logo of the Central Bank of Swaziland. The denomination in letters is presented in the English language. This note is part of the 2015 commemorative series “Vision 2022”, and its color is green on a multicolor underprint.
