The rand is the official currency in South Africa since 1961 when it replaced the pound. The official currency symbol is: R. the name is derived from “Witwatersrand” (whitewater ridge), where the city of Johannesburg was built, and large deposits of gold were found in the country. The rand as legal tender in the Common Monetary Areas is also used in Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia. The first series of banknotes were issued in 1961 in denominations of 1, 2, 10, and 20 rand, followed by the 5 rand note in 1966 and 50 rand in 1984. In 2012, a new series of banknotes were announced in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 rand. The series includes the face of Nelson Mandela on the front and the Big Five Animals on the reverse side.

The 200 South African ran note front design features Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918 – 2013), who was a South African revolutionary leader and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, over an artistic background with shadows that allude to cave paintings. The National Coat of Arms and the denomination. The reverse note side illustrates an African leopard and the denomination in Sesotho and Zulu language. This note is part of the 2013 – 2016 series, and its color is brown and orange on multicolor underprint.
