The rand is the official currency in South Africa since 1961 when it replaced the pound. The official currency symbol is: R. the name is derived from “Witwatersrand” (whitewater ridge), where the city of Johannesburg was built, and large deposits of gold were found in the country. The rand as legal tender in the Common Monetary Areas is also used in Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia. The first series of coins were issued in 1961 in denominations 12, 1, 212, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents. The 212 cent coin was replaced by 2 in 1965, and the 1 rand coin was introduced in 1967. The last production of the 12 rand coin was made in 1973. The 2 and 5 rand coins were introduced in 1989 and 1994, respectively.

The 1 South African rand coin front design features the National Coat of Arms (It consists of a stylized design of a secretarybird with outstretched wings, on its head, there is an arch of seven rays, on the bird’s chest; a stylized representation of a protea flower with petals. The shield contains two human figures with clasped hands and a spear and saber on top. Four elephant tusks surround the shield: two on each side and ears of Brunatré wheat, in the same way, one on each side. Below, a band with the motto: “KE E: / XARRA // KE” (Diverse people united) and the country name in the Chichewa and Zulu language. The reverse coin design illustrates a springbok and denomination with Soli Deo Gloria’s motto (Glory to God alone). This coin is part of the 2007 series, its rim is segmented fluted, and its color is silver.
