Description

The dobra is the official currency of the São Tomé and Príncipe since 1977, when it replaced the escudo. The name derived from Portuguese “dobra” which means doubloon (double). In 1977, the Banco Nacional de São Tomé e Príncipe introduced notes in denominations of 50, 100, 500 and 1000 dobras, followed by 5000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 dobras note in 1996. In 2018, the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe (Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe) announced a redenomination of the dobra and second series of notes were issued in denomination of 5, 20, 50, 100 and 200 dobras.

In 2009, the government of São Tomé and Príncipe signed a loan contract with Portugal, which aimed to link the dobra to the euro. This measure would guarantee economic stability in the country and make the country attractive for foreign financial investment.

The 10 São Tomé and Príncipe dobras note front design features the acraea niobe butterfly with different sketches of the animal around it, a stamp with a butterfly figure inside and the butterfly-shaped sketch with a Rei Amador profile inside; Amador Vieira (Rei Amador) was a member of the king of the Angolars and leader of a famous slave rebellion that took place in 1595 in the African islands of São Tomé and Príncipe. In the background, is presented a view of the main building of the Central Bank of São Tomé e Príncipe in São Tomé (capital). The reverse of the note illustrates a São Tomé prinia, the map of S. Tomé and Príncipe with the political division and location according to the equatorial line, different sketches of the Acraea insularis butterfly, a stamp with a butterfly figure inside, the butterfly-shaped sketch with a Rei Amador profile inside and a cacao fruit stamp. Both sides of the note preset the lettering and the denomination in the Portuguese language. This note is part of the 2016 series, and its color is red on a multicolor underprint.
