Sao Tome and Principe 1 Dobra

Description

The dobra is the official currency of the São Tomé and Príncipe since 1977, when it replaced the escudo. The name derived from Portuguese “dobra” which means doubloon (double). In 1977, the Banco Nacional de São Tomé e Príncipe introduced coins in denominations of 50 cêntimos, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 dobras, Followed by the 50 dobras coin in 1990. Seven years later, a large denomination series was introduced of 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 dobras. In 2018, the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe (Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe) announced a redenomination of the dobra and second series of coins were issued in 10, 20 and 50 cêntimos and 1 and 2 dobras.

In 2009, the government of São Tomé and Príncipe signed a loan contract with Portugal, which aimed to link the dobra to the euro. This measure would guarantee economic stability in the country and make the country attractive for foreign financial investment.

The 1 Sao Tome and Principe dobra coin front design features the National Coat of Arms (consist of a red-footed falcon on the left and a grey parrot on the right holding a coat of arms with a palm tree in its center. Over the shield is a blue star, and above, a band that states the country’s name. At the base, the motto, “Unidade, Disciplina, Trabalho” (unity, discipline, work), and the issue date. The reverse coin design illustrates a giant sunbird and the denomination. Both sides of the coin preset the lettering in the Portuguese language. This coin is part of the 2017 series, its rim is indented, and its color is silver.
