The franc is the official currency in Rwanda since 1960 when it replaced the Belgian Congo franc. The official currency symbol is FRw. In 1964, the Government introduced coins in denominations of 1, 5, and 10 francs, followed by ½ and 2 francs in 1970. In 1977 were introduced the 20 and 50 francs. In 2013, The National Bank of Rwanda issued a new coin series in denominations from 1 to 50 francs, followed by 100 francs in 2007.
The 100 Rwandan amafaranga coin front design features the denomination with the official currency symbol and the issue date. The reverse coin design illustrates the seal of Rwanda (consists of the sun below the name of the republic, tribal elements in the center; a stalk of sorghum, a branch of a coffee tree and a traditional basket; the three components are on top a cogwheel. Two typical Rwandan shields on each side of the central figure and a square knot encloses the entire design. The motto: “Ubumwe, Umurimo, Gukunda Igihugu” (Unity, Work, Patriotism), and the denomination in the Kinyarwanda language. This coin is part of the 2009 – 2011 series, its rim is plain, and its color is bronze and silver
