The Romanian leu is the official currency of Romania. The official currency symbol: L. The currency’s name is derived from a Romanian word that means “lion.”
Four series of Romanian leu coins have been issued. The process started in 1867 when the 1, 2, 5 and 10 bani coins were issued, followed by the 20 lei coin minted in the following year. The 50 bani and the 1 and 2 lei coins were issued between 1870 and 1873, followed by the 5 lei minted in 1880. A second series was issued in 1947, followed by a third series in 1952. The fourth series of coins, which is currently circulating, was introduced in 2005 in denominations of 1 ban, 5 bani, 10 bani and 50 bani.
The 1 Romanian ban coin front design features the the National Coat of Arms, the country’s name, eight stars and the date of issue. The reverse of the coin presents the denomination. This coin is part of the 2005 – 2017 series, its rim is plain, and its color is gold.
