Description

The guaraní is the official currency in Paraguay since 1943, replacing the peso. The first coins were issued one year later in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centimos. Then, in 1975 new denominations were introduced; 1, 5, 10 and 50 guaraníes, followed by 100 guaraníes in 1990, 500 guaraníes in 1997. In 2005 the 1, 5 and 10 coins were discontinued, and the 1000 guaraníes coin were added in 2006.

The 50 Guaraníes coin front design features the bust of José Félix Estigarribia Insaurralde (1888 – 1940), who was a decorated war hero in Paraguay during the Chaco War. The reverse coin design has the Acaray Dam and the denomination. This coin is part of the 2006 – 2016 series, its rim is plain, and its color is silver.
