Description
The metical is the official currency of Mozambican since 1980, when it replaced the escudo. The name is derived from the Arabic word “mithqal,” an alternative name for the gold dinar coin. The first metical coins were introduced in denominations 50 centavos, 1, 2+1⁄2, 5, 10 and 20 meticais, followed by 50 meticais in 1986, 100, 500 and 1000 meticais in 1994, 5000 meticais in 1998 and 10,000 meticais in 2003. In 2006, Banco de Moçambique (Bank of Mozambique) introduced a new series of coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 centavos and 1, 2, 5, 10 meticais.
The 200 Mozambican meticais commemorative coin front design features National Emblem (consists of a cogwheel surrounded by corn stalks and sugar cane and a red star at the top. Inside the gear, a red sun on a map of Mozambique sea waves, an AK-47 crossed with a hoe and a book. At the base, a ribbon that is entangled in the corn stalks and the sugarcane with the country’s name). The reverse coin design illustrates a young woman sitting on a chair writing in a book and the denomination. This coin is part of the 2015 commemorative series “35th Anniversary of the Metical”. Its rim is fluted, and its color is silver.
