The Mexican Peso is the official currency in Mexico. The first coin was issued in 1863 in centavos and peso denominations. In 1992, the United Mexican States’ Monetary System introduced a new monetary system called “Nuevo peso”. The Bank of Mexico issued a series of coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 pesos.
The 10 Pesos coin front design features the National Coat of Arms of Mexico (made up of a Mexican eagle perched on a flowered nopal, ready to devour a snake. Two branches, one oak in front of the eagle and another of laurel on the opposite side). The reverse coin design has the Stone of the Sun representing Tonatiuh with the Mask of fire, the denomination, and the Mint “M°” symbol. This coin is part of the C-1996 series, its rim is fluted, and its color is silver and gold.
