Description

The Indian rupee is the official currency of India. The Indian rupee dates from the 6th century BCE, being one of the oldest coins in the history of humankind. The official currency symbol: ₹. After India’s independence from the British empire in 1947, the first coins were issued until 1950 in denominations of 1 pice, ½, 1 and 2 annas, ¼, ½ and 1 rupee.  In 1957, the first decimal series was issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 naye paise and 1 rupee. The words naya/naye were removed in 1964, and coins in denominations of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 paise were introduced, followed by a 20 paise in 1968, 25 paise in 192, 50 and 1 paise in 1975, 1 2 rupees in 1982, and 5 rupees in 1992. The 10, 20, and 25 rupees coins were discontinued between 1997 and 2002. Between 2005 and 2008, new 50 paise, 1, 2, and 5 rupee coins were introduced.

The 5 Indian rupees coin front design features an Ashoka pillar (monolithic columns scattered throughout the Indian subcontinent), which are important monuments of Indian architecture, and the name of the country. The reverse of the coin design presents the denomination flanked by two sketches of the National Flower (Lotus – Nelumbo Nucifera Gaertn) and the issue date. This coin is part of the 2011 – 2017 series, its rim is fluted, and its color is gold.
