India 2000 Rupees

Description

The Indian rupee is the official currency of India. The Indian rupee dates from the 6th century BCE, being one of the oldest coins in the history of humankind. The official currency symbol: ₹. After India’s independence from the British empire in 1947, the Reserve Bank of India issued notes in denominations of 5000 and 10000 rupees; all pre-independence banknotes were demonetized. During the 1970s, the 20 and 50 rupees notes were introduced, and all the denominations higher than 100 rupees were demonetized. In 1987, the 500 note was introduced, followed by 1000 rupees in 2000. In 1996, the Reserve Bank of India introduced notes a new 10 and 500 rupees banknote.  In 2012, a new series of banknotes were issued in 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 rupees. Then in 2014, The Reserve Bank of India announced that all banknotes before 2005 would be withdrawn from circulation by 2016. From that date and for the year 2019, the circulating banknotes are denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 2000 rupees.

The 2000 Indian rupees note front design features the portrait of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), who was an Indian lawyer recognized for leading the Indian independence movement from British rule. His legacy has been a symbol of inspiration for movements fighting for civil rights and freedom worldwide. In the portrait’s background, there is an ornamental Indian ring pattern, the Reserve Bank of India logo, and an Ashoka pillar (monolithic columns scattered throughout the Indian subcontinent), which are important monuments of Indian architecture. The reverse of the note illustrates the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan, which is a space probe that has been orbiting Mars since 2014; it was launched in 2013 by the Indian Space Research Organization, the denomination on a panel in fifteen different languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telegu, and Urdu), below the figure of the temple and the panel, there is a band with a series of illustrations of the Indian culture. The design is completed by the logo of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) (a country-wide campaign initiated by the Government of India in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management), which is represented by a sketch of Gandhi glasses. The lettering in the note is presented in the Nepali and English languages. This note is part of the 2016 – 2017 series, and its color is violet and purple-brown.
