Description
The Hong Kong dollar is the official currency of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The official currency symbol: “$”, “HK$” or “元”.
Hong Kong currency, which includes denominations of 10 ¢, 20 ¢, 50 ¢, $ 1, $ 2, $ 5, and $ 10, is issued by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority on behalf of the Hong Kong Government. Between 1993 and 1994, a new series was issued that included a new denomination of $ 10. Small-value purchases and payments in Hong Kong are mainly made with the Octopus card (a smart card for making electronic payments in online or offline systems in Hong Kong) since its launch in 1997. From 1998 to 2011, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority stopped issuing new coins as the jurisdiction had enough on hand. After 14 years of not minting coins in circulation, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority began minting the Bauhinia series coins in 2012 due to the increased consumption of coins in the territory since 2004.
The 5 Hong Kong dollar coin front design features a stylized design of a Bauhinia flower and the inscription: Hong Kong. The reverse of the coin presents the denomination and the issue date. This coin is part of the 1993 – 2017 series; its rim has a security edge with lettering; HONG KONG FIVE DOLLARS. Its color is silver.
