The Honduran Lempira is the official currency in Honduras and was named in honor of the Cacique Lempira in the 16th Century. The Lempira was introduced to replace the peso in 1931. The first coins in denominations of 5, 20 and 50 centavos and 1, 5 and 10 lempira were issued in 1931 by the Bank of Honduras and the Banco Atlantida. In 1937, the 2 and 10 centavos were published, followed by the 1 lempira in 1937.
The 50 Lempira Centavos coin front design features the National Coat of Arms (an equilateral triangle; At its base, a mountain range of five volcanoes will appear, on a terrain that is bathed by both seas; at the top, a rainbow that covers them and under the arch, the cap of freedom spreading lights.
