Description

The Guatemalan quetzal is the official currency in Guatemala and was named in honor of the national bird “resplendent quetzal”. It was introduced in 1925, replacing the peso. The first notes were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 100 quetzals by the Central Bank of Guatemala. Later in 1933, the ½ quetzal note was introduced in the monetary system. The last banknote introduced were the 50 quetzals note in 1967. However, the ½ and 1 quetzal notes were replaced by coins at the end of the 1990s.

Currently are circulating banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Guatemalan quetzals.

The 5 Quetzales note front design features Justo Rufino Barrios (who was the President of Guatemala). The reverse note side has the image of Education allegory. This note is part of the 2010 – 2018 series and, its color is violet and purple on a multicolor underprint.
