The first notes were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 100 quetzals by the Central Bank of Guatemala. Later in 1933, the ½ quetzal note was introduced in the monetary system. The last banknote introduced were the 50 quetzals note in 1967. However, the ½ and 1 quetzal notes were replaced by coins at the end of the 1990s.

Currently are circulating banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 Guatemalan quetzals.
