Description
The Gibraltar pound is the official currency of Gibraltar since 1934. In 1988, the government of Gibraltar introduced coins in denominations of were introduced coin of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p and 1£, followed by the 2£ in 1999, and a new 5£ coin in 2010. Although the Bank of England backs the notes and coins, they are only a legal tender within Gibraltar. Unlike the Bank of England, whose coins and notes also circulate in Gibraltar and are universally accepted and interchangeable with Gibraltarian issues. The official currency symbol: £/p (pre-decimal).
The 50 Gibraltar pence coin front design features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (Queen of the United Kingdom and 15 other commonwealth realms) and the issue date. The reverse of the coin illustrates a Barbary macaque and the denomination. This coin is part of the 2014 – 2016 series, its rim is plain, and its color is silver.
