The lari is the official currency of Georgia. The name lari is derived from an old Georgian word referring to hoard or property, while tetri means “white”. The official currency symbol: . Initially, Georgia used a currency known as kuponi, which replaced the Russian ruble and consisted only of banknotes. Then in 1995, the government replaced the kuponi with the lira and introduced notes in denomination of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 lari.

The 20 Georgian lari note front design features the portrait of Prince Ilia Chavchavadze (1837 –1907), was a Georgian public figure and national hero who led the revival of the Georgian national movement in the second half of the 19th century, playing a pivotal role in the creation of Georgian civil society during the Russian rule of Georgia, on a background with the building of the magazine “Sakartvelos Moambe”, the newspaper “Iveria” established by him, and other personal things; lens, a watch, a pen and inkpot. The design is completed by a hologram with Chavchavadze portrait, a sketch of a flower, a stylized old wagon, and a sketch of the country’s map.

The reverse of the note presents the Monument of the Great Georgian king Vakhtang, on a background with the panorama of old Tbilisi, an XVII century plan of Tbilisi city created by Vakhushti Batonishvili’s in 1735 and the Narikala fortress. On the upper right corner is presented the National Coat of Arms. The lettering is presented in the Georgian and English language. This note is part of the 2016 series, and its color is brown and red.
