The lari is the official currency of Georgia. The name lari is derived from an old Georgian word referring to hoard or property, while tetri means “white”. The official currency symbol: ₾. Initially, Georgia used a currency known as kuponi, which replaced the Russian ruble and consisted only of banknotes. Then in 1995, the government replaced the kuponi with the lira and introduced coins in denomination of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 tetri, and 1 and 2 lari.
The 2 Georgian lari coin front design features the National Coat of Arms (consists of a shield that contains a silver rider on a silver horse and with a silver spear topped with a golden cross, Saint George with a golden halo, striking a silver dragon. The shield is crowned with the Iverian (Georgian) crown and is supported by two gilded lions standing on a compartment of stylized vine ornament. The base presents a silver-violet ribbon with two heraldic crosses and the motto; “Mkhedruli (Strength is in unity).), with a stylized ancient Kolkhi Tetri coin with lion’s head below, the name of the country and the issue date. The reverse of the coin design presents the denomination and a stylized ancient Kolkhi Tetri coin with a lion’s head. This coin is part of the 2006 series; its rim is fluted with lettering (* GEORGIA *), and its color is gold and silver.
