The pound is the official currency in the Falkland Islands since 1833 when the British Government introduced it. The first issued by the Falkland Islands bank were ½, 1, 2, 5 and 10 pence coins in 1974, followed by the 50 pence coin in 1980 and 20 pence coin in 1982. The 1 and 2 pound coins were introduced between 1987 and 2004 and, the ½ penny was discontinued in 1983.

The 50 Falkland Islands Pence commemorative coin front design features an Elizabeth II (Queen of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms) bust. The reverse coin design has the National Coat of Arms (consists of a sheep on tussock grass, a colonial sailing ship and the motto: “Desire the Right”) and the denomination on below. This coin is part of the 1997 commemorative series: “25th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II”, its rim is milled, and its color is silver.
