The nakfa is the official currency in Eritrea since 1997, when it replaced the Ethiopian birr. In 2015, the Bank of Eritrea started a top-secret operation to replace all the banknotes to combat the counterfeiting given by the informal economy and especially human trafficking. In 2016 the old nakfa banknotes stopped recognizing as legal tender. The coins series were issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents and 1 nakfa.
The 10 Eritrean cents coin front design features a scene of the Eritrean War of Independence (raising the flag when Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1991), the motto: “Liberty·Equality·Justice”, and the issue date. The reverse coin design illustrates an ostrich and the denomination. This coin is part of the 1997 series, its rim is fluted, and its color is silver.
