The first signs of the Dominican peso date back to 1844, when it replaced the Haitian gourde. A second Dominican currency was issued between 1891 and 1897, the franc. But it did not replace the Dominican peso until 1905, when the US dollar replaced the peso until 1937 when regulation was generated to define the Dominican peso as the national currency. The first banknotes issued by the National Bank were in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 500 and 1000 pesos oros in 1947. The 10 and 20 pesos were replaced by 10 and 25 coins in 2005, and in 2011, the Central Bank of Dominican Republic declare that all the banknotes dated 2011 and later will call “Pesos Dominicanos.”

The 1000 Pesos Dominicanos note front design features the National Palace (houses Executive Branch Presidency and Vice Presidency offices). The reverse note side has the image of Columbus Alcazar (which forms part of the Ciudad Colonial UNESCO’s World Heritage Site). This note is part of the 2014 – 2019 series and, its color red, violet and yellow.
