The Colombian peso has been the official currency in Colombia since 1810 when the real was replaced. In 1923, the Banco de la República de Colombia was created, and in 1931 it abandoned the gold standard to link its exchange rate to the US dollar. In 2016, the Banco de la República announced a new series circulating with the existing notes.
The 50,000 Pesos note front design features Gabriel García Márquez. (1927 – 2014), who was a Colombian novelist. He was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. The reverse note side has two indigenous people at the left, and the center has the Ciudad Perdida, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This note is part of the 2016 series and, its color is violet.
