The renminbi is the official currency of the People’s Republic of China. The official currency symbol: 元 / ¥. The yuan is the basic unit of the renminbi. However, the term yuan is used in international contexts and is commonly used to refer to the currency of China. The People’s Bank of China introduced the renminbi in December 1948, before the People’s Republic of China was formed. It was first exclusively printed in paper money form, and it replaced the different currencies in circulation in Communist-controlled areas.
The People’s Republic of China has issued five banknote series; the first series of banknotes was issued in 1948 by the newly founded People’s Bank of China, which introduced notes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1000 yuan, followed by the 200, 500, 5000 and 10,000 yuan in 1949, and the 50,000 yuan in 1950. The second series of banknotes was introduced in 1955, in denominations of ¥0.01, ¥0.02, ¥0.05, ¥0.1, ¥0.2, ¥0.5, ¥1, ¥2, ¥3, ¥5 and ¥10. The third series of banknotes was introduced in 1962, with denominations of ¥0.1, ¥0.2, ¥0.5, ¥1, ¥2, ¥5 and ¥10. The fourth series of banknotes was introduced between 1987 and 1997, in denominations of ¥0.1, ¥0.2, ¥0.5, ¥1, ¥2, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50 and ¥100. The fifth series of banknotes was started to be introduced in 1999 and includes notes in denominations of ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50 and ¥100.
The 50 Chinese yuan commemorative note front design features a stylized design of the trunk of a tree in which its different rings show the first to the fifth series of banknotes issued by The People’s Bank of China and the National Coat of Arms.
The reverse of the note illustrates the People’s Bank of China building, complemented by the sketch of a Peony flower and the former headquarters of the People’s Bank of China. The lettering of the note is presented in the Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur and Zhuang languages. This note is part of the 2018 commemorative series: ‘’70th Anniversary of the Renminbi’’. Its color is brown and orange on a green underprint.
