Description

The Chilean peso has been the official currency of Chile since 1817 after the country’s independence, but in 1959 the peso was replaced by the “escudo”. After a series of statutory decrees, the peso was once again positioned as the country’s official currency in 1975. The coins were introduced in denominations of 1,2, 10 and 50 centavos and 1 peso. One year later, the 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 banknotes were replaced by coins.

The 50 Pesos coin front design features Bernardo O’Higgins (1778 – 1842), a national hero who signed Chile’s independence in 1818. The reverse coin design has the denomination surrounded by a laurel wreath. This coin is part of the 1981 series, its rim is chain stitch engraving, and its color is bronze.
