The Chilean peso has been the official currency of Chile since 1817 after the country’s independence, but in 1959 the peso was replaced by the “escudo”. After a series of statutory decrees, the peso was once again positioned as the country’s official currency in 1975. One year later, notes started to being introduced in denominations of 5, 10, 50 and 100 pesos, and with the inflation effects, the highest denominations were issued too; 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000 and 200000. Coins replaced the 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 banknotes.

The 2000 Pesos note front design features Manuel Rodriguez (1785 – 1818), who was a Chilean lawyer and guerrilla leader, considered one of the founders of independent Chile. The reverse note side has Nalcas National Reserve’s image whit a Choroy parrot, a bird that lives exclusively in Chile in southern forests. This note is part of the 2009 – 2020 polymer series and, its color is black on purple and rose underprint.
