Description
The Cayman Islands Dollar is the official currency in the Cayman Islands since 1972, 10 years after the separation from the Colony of Jamaica and substituting the Jamaican dollar. There were issued coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents, and these denominations are circulating nowadays.
The 5 Cayman Islands Dollars coin front design features an Elizabeth II (Queen of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms) bust. The reverse coin design has a figure of Christopher Columbus, and an illustration of his ships set: “La Niña, La Pinta, y la Santa Maria”, and the denomination. This coin is part of the 1988 commemorative issue: “500th Anniversary of Columbus’ Discovery of America”. Its rim is plain, and its color is silver.
