Description
The Brunei dollar is the official currency of the Sultanate of Brunei. The official currency symbol: $, B$. The Brunei dollar was established in 1967 after the Currency Interchangeability Agreement with Singapore, in which the Brunei dollar is interchangeable with the Singapore dollar. The Malaysian dollar, Singapore dollar and the Brunei dollar are circulating all at par, and they replaced the Malaya and British Borneo dollar. The government introduced the first banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 dollars, followed by the 500 and 1000 dollars notes, introduced in 1979.
Five series of banknotes have been introduced since 1967; the fifth and last series was introduced in 2011 in denominations of $1, $5 and $10. Today banknotes circulate in denominations of $ 1, $ 5, $ 10, $ 50, $ 100; plus banknotes of $20, $25, $ 500, $1000, and $10,000, which are not used often.
The 50 Brunei dollars commemorative note front design features the portrait of Hassanal Bolkiah, who is the 29th and current Sultan, Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei and the Prime Minister, followed by the coronation scene and the National Emblem.
The reverse of the note illustrates Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on his way to the coronation amid a crowd. The lettering of the note is presented in the Jawi and English languages. This note is part of the 2017 commemorative series: ‘’50th Anniversary of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne”. Its color is brown and yellow on a multicolor underprint.
