The dollar is the official currency in Barbados since 1935, when the Barbadian government-issued paper money denominated in dollars. This currency replaced the East Caribbean dollar, and notes were introduced in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 20 and 100 dollars. The 1 dollar was discontinued, and the 2 dollars note introduced in 1980, followed by a 50 dollars note in 1989. A new notes design was issued in 2013.

Currently are circulating banknotes with denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars.

The 50 Dollars note front features Errol Barrow (1920 – 1987), who was a Caribbean statesman and the first Prime Minister of Barbados, Brown pelican (pelecanus occidentalis). The reverse note side has Independence Square with a statue of Errol Barrow, Bridgetown. This note is part of the 2013 – 2017 series and, its color is blue and tan on multicolor underprint.
