The dollar is the official currency in the Bahamas since 1966 when it replaced the pound 7 years before the national independence. Coins with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 15, 25 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 dollars were introduced during the first transition. The 50 cents and 1 dollar coins do not replace the corresponding banknotes.
The Bahamian 5 Dollars coin front design features the National Coat of Arms (consist of a royal helmet, mantled and a wreath, a conch and a shell, panache of palm fronds, a representation of the Santa Maria colonial ship, a Marlin fish and a Flamingo, Sea waves and a Swampland. Motto: “Forward, Upward, Onward Together”), and the phrase: “Commonwealth of the Bahamas”. The reverse coin design has the National Flag and the denomination on top. This coin is part of the 1974 – 1978 series, its rim is fluted, and its color is silver.
