Description
The lek is the official currency of Albania. The official currency symbol: L. The currency’s name is derived from Alexander the Great, whose name is shortened to Leka in the Albanian language.
Three lek coins have been issued in Albania. The first lek coins were introduced in 1926 by the National Bank of Albania (Banka Kombëtare e Shqipnis). The second series was issued in 1969, and the third and last one was introduced in 1995, with denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 lekë, followed by a 100 lekë coin in 2000.
The 1 Albanian lek coin front design features a great white pelican, the name of the country and the issue date. The reverse of the coin presents the denomination and a branch wreath. This coin is part of the 2008 – 2013 series, its rim is plain, and its color is bronze.
